First Inhabitants: the Indians

Among The First

Any history of the United States should, naturally, begin with the Indians. In the Posen area we find almost no reference to the Indians. Apparently, the Indians in Presque Isle County were fishermen and trappers and lived mostly in the areas near the water. There is an Indian burial ground in Presque Isle on the East side of Grand Lake. Other references to the Indian are at Onaway, Indian River, Cheboygan and areas to the North and West. In searching through the old records of our township we find only one reference to the Indian, and that was in April, 1880, when the Posen Township Board ruled that beer and liquor were not to be sold to Indians.
